International Monetary Fund finds AI reduces job demand in exposed Asian occupations by almost 10%

Key Updates:

  • The International Monetary Fund's (IMF) October 2026 Regional Economic Outlook: Asia and Pacific found employer demand fell by nearly 10% in occupations more exposed to artificial intelligence (AI) since ChatGPT's launch in November 2022.
  • The IMF report is based on approximately 40 million online job postings across 19 Asian economies.
  • The decline in demand for workers in AI-exposed occupations has stabilized, while new roles requiring specialized AI skills like prompt engineering and AI agent development are emerging.
  • Around 6% of firms in Asia explicitly seek AI skills in their job postings, and businesses adopting AI experience stronger labor demand growth than those that have not.
  • Emerging economies like India may initially be less exposed to AI due to a large workforce in agriculture, but AI could pose a long-term challenge for transitioning workers into higher-productivity sectors.
  • The report emphasizes that education reform, reskilling programs, digital infrastructure, and stronger labor-market institutions are essential responses to AI disruption.

Supreme Court says Sahyog Portal can serve as foundation for national database to detect and remove child sexual exploitation material

Key Updates:

  • On October 15, 2026, a Supreme Court bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran said the Union government's Sahyog Portal could provide the foundation for a national Hash & URL List Database to detect and remove child sexual exploitation and abuse material (CSEAM) across online platforms.
  • The proposed database would contain verified digital fingerprints (hashes) and URLs of CSEAM, with each entry verified by at least three trained human analysts, and would store only digital identifiers and URLs, not the material itself.
  • The court directed the Union government to frame guidelines and standard operating procedures to strengthen detection, removal and reporting of CSEAM, including amendments to the Information Technology Act and IT Rules where necessary.
  • Platforms must promptly remove material matching a verified database entry, provide users a notice explaining the removal, and report CSEAM to Indian law enforcement authorities including the Special Juvenile Police Unit and local police, with removals reported within two hours.
  • The constitutional validity of the Sahyog Portal has been challenged by parties including X Corp; the Karnataka High Court upheld it in September last year, and the Supreme Court stayed parallel challenges, including pleas in the Bombay High Court by Kunal Kamra, in August after a Union government transfer petition.
  • The court asked the government to consider exemplary monetary penalties proportionate to the gravity and recurrence of violations and to disgorge revenue earned from CSEAM circulated through paywalls or subscriptions.
  • The government must file an affidavit detailing compliance progress by the next hearing on December 10, 2026.

IISER Thiruvananthapuram team creates compound that releases hydrogen and methane on heating

Key Updates:

  • Scientists at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram (IISER) developed a solid compound called magnesium hydridomethylzincate, made of magnesium, zinc, hydrogen, and carbon, that releases fuel gases when heated moderately.
  • When heated in solution to 100°C the compound released hydrogen, and when its crystals were heated without a solvent at 80-110°C it released both hydrogen and methane.
  • The findings were published in the journal Science Advances on October 7, 2026.
  • The team found that methane was released before hydrogen through successive chemical reactions, and each unit of the compound's paired molecular structure could produce two molecules each of hydrogen and methane.
  • As magnesium hydridomethylzincate is solid at room temperature and releases the gases at relatively low temperatures, it could offer an alternative to transporting methane and hydrogen as compressed gases.
  • The compound is highly sensitive to moisture, and it is not yet known whether it can be replenished once its gaseous contents are depleted.

  • After Ladakh became a Union Territory in 2019, its name was inserted into the high court, but the CJI described that earlier step as largely symbolic compared to the new physical bench.

Allahabad High Court holds transgender woman outside 'woman' definition in BNS Section 69 while granting bail

Key Updates:

  • The Allahabad High Court, in an October 15 order by Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal, held that a transgender woman who has undergone sex-reassignment surgery does not fall within the definition of 'woman' under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which criminalises sexual intercourse by deceitful means or false promise of marriage.
  • The court ruled that a transgender person has a separate identity under the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, and that the word 'woman' in Section 69 of the BNS includes only a female human being.
  • The observation came while granting bail to Mohd Sakir, accused of a physical relationship with a transgender woman on a false promise of marriage, in a case registered at Izzatnagar police station in Bareilly district.
  • The complainant, in a relationship with the accused for over one-and-a-half years, alleged he took over ₹5 lakh from her and then refused to marry her.
  • The informant stated she was assigned male at birth, underwent vulval reconstruction surgery on April 11, 2023, and had disclosed her transgender identity to the accused before the relationship.
  • A medical panel report of August 19, 2026, cited by the accused's counsel, found the alleged victim was male with changed genital parts and without a uterus.
  • The court noted the parliamentary standing committee on home affairs had recommended bringing transgender women within the rape provisions of the BNS, but Parliament did not accept the recommendation.
  • The high court held that, prima facie, no offence under Section 69 of the BNS was made out and granted bail to the accused subject to conditions.
