Delhi Placed 268th Out of 1,000 Cities in Oxford Economics Global Cities Index 2026

Key facts

• Delhi secured the 268th position among 1,000 cities in the Oxford Economics Global Cities Index 2026, the highest rank among around 100 Indian cities featured in the index.
• Delhi's strongest performance came in Human Capital, where it ranked 13th globally in the top 5%, while it stood 116th in Economics, 415th in Governance, 781st in Quality of Life and 915th in Environment.
• The Global Cities Index compares 1,000 major cities across the five categories of Economics, Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment and Governance, and is designed to look at both a city's present performance and its future potential.
• Among Indian cities, Delhi was followed by Bengaluru at 311th, Mumbai at 330th, Chennai at 381st, Hyderabad at 421st and Pune at 427th.
• Other Indian cities in the ranking included Thrissur at 477th, Kochi at 489th, Kolkata at 496th and Kozhikode at 499th.
• At the lower end of the Indian rankings, Sangli was placed 920th, Shahjahanpur 953rd, Dhanbad 965th, Bokaro 987th and Sultanpur 999th.
• New York topped the Oxford Economics Global Cities Index 2026, followed by London at second, Paris at third, Seattle at fourth and San Francisco at fifth.
