Assam to Get Second Saraighat Double-Decker Rail-Cum-Road Bridge with Agthori-Kamakhya Railway Line Doubling

Key facts

• The Ministry of Railways will take up the Second Saraighat Rail-Cum-Road Bridge project in Assam, along with doubling of the 7.20-km railway line between Agthori and Kamakhya stations, under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).
• Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has been entrusted with the Agthori-Kamakhya doubling project sanctioned in 2024, with geotechnical investigations completed and engineering, design and construction drawings in progress.
• The centrepiece of the project will be a 1.3-km double-decker bridge across the Brahmaputra, with the lower deck carrying two railway lines and the upper deck a three-lane road and a footpath.
• The existing Saraighat Bridge carries one railway line and a two-lane road.
• The main bridge will use well foundations and a welded Open Web Girder superstructure with a 125-metre span.
• Approach viaducts will extend about 600 metres towards Agthori and 200 metres towards Kamakhya, and the project will connect with NHAI road approaches towards Jalukbari and the Agthori-side road network.
• Digital monitoring and bridge instrumentation will be used as part of construction and long-term structural monitoring systems.
• With the monsoon season nearing its end, L&T is advancing mobilisation and preparatory work, with piling activities scheduled to begin in October 2026.
