Key facts
- The Indian Navy will commission its first Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV) Samarthak and the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) Mangrol in October 2026.
- Samarthak, built at the Larsen and Toubro shipyard in Kattupalli, has over 75 per cent indigenous content and will serve as a trial and evaluation platform for next-generation naval systems, besides maritime surveillance and disaster relief roles in the Indian Ocean Region.
- Mangrol is designed to track and neutralise hostile submarines in coastal waters, strengthening the Navy's near-shore anti-submarine deterrence.
- The Navy commissioned INS Nipun, a Diving Support Vessel built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited, in Mumbai on August 31, 2026, marking the eighth indigenous induction of the year.
- The single-year expansion phase began on February 27, 2026 with INS Anjadip, followed by INS Taragiri on April 3 and a rare triple-commissioning on June 21 of INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak and INS Agray.
