Indian Navy Launches Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel Shreyas (Yard 3040) at GRSE, Kolkata on 10 October 2026

Key facts

• Yard 3040, named 'Shreyas' (meaning 'Best' or 'Most Excellent' in Sanskrit), a Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV), was launched at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, on 10 October 2026 by Mrs Reyman Kochhar in the presence of Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar, Vice Chief of the Naval Staff.
• NGOPVs are indigenously designed and built, with construction concurrently undertaken at two shipyards: GSL, Goa and GRSE, Kolkata.
• These ships will augment existing OPVs/NOPVs for multi-domain operations including maritime surveillance, search and rescue, protection of offshore assets, HADR and anti-piracy missions.
• The launch aligns with the Government of India's 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' and 'Make in India' initiatives.
