India Climbs to 31st Place in World Economic Forum Travel & Tourism Development Index 2026

Key facts

• India ranked 31st in the World Economic Forum's Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI) 2026, improving from 39th place in 2024.
• Japan topped the TTDI 2026, and 92% of the 110 economies in the index improved their scores since 2024, the strongest global conditions since 2019.
• India ranks among the top 10 for the number of UNESCO World Heritage cultural sites but has gaps in tourist services, infrastructure and environmental sustainability.
• Emerging economies Brazil, China, India and Mexico account for over 17% of UNESCO World Heritage natural sites among TTDI-ranked economies.
• The 10 largest non-high-income travel and tourism economies, including China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Viet Nam, the Philippines, Türkiye, Mexico and Brazil, account for over 28% of global direct travel and tourism GDP, projected to rise to 35% by 2035.
• Advanced economies hold nine of the top 10 spots, while the largest emerging tourism economies have improved their scores more than twice as fast as the Top 20 since 2019.
