Government Brings Smartphone Screen Protectors Under Compulsory BIS Registration From April 2027

Key facts

• The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) notified on September 21 that 'Screen Protectors for smartphones' have been added to the compulsory registration framework for electronic products under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
• From April 1, 2027, manufacturers and importers must ensure smartphone screen protectors comply with the Indian Standard IS 19348:2025 before they can be sold in India.
• The IS 19348:2025 standard lays down quality and testing requirements for glass screen protectors, covering glass quality, clarity, additional features and packaging.
• The government has not imposed an immediate ban on screen protectors, and companies have been given a transition period of more than six months to meet the new requirements.
• The Gazette notification does not state that prices will increase; any price impact would depend on how companies manage the additional testing and certification requirements.
