Asad Alam Siam Appointed Bangladesh's Next High Commissioner to India

• Bangladesh has appointed Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam as its next High Commissioner to India after receiving New Delhi's formal consent.
• Siam, a career diplomat and Bangladesh's senior-most foreign service officer, will replace M Riaz Hamidullah, who has been appointed Bangladesh's permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) in Geneva.
• Siam joined the Bangladesh Foreign Service in 1995 and, before becoming the foreign ministry's top bureaucrat in June 2025, served as Bangladesh's ambassador to the United States and earlier as ambassador to Australia.
• Dhaka's decision to send its senior-most diplomat to India followed New Delhi's appointment of former Union minister Dinesh Trivedi as its envoy to Bangladesh in April this year.
• India-Bangladesh ties saw a downturn during the 18-month tenure of the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, which took charge after a student-led uprising toppled the Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024.
